Guide to Puerto San Miguel

'The first thing you'll notice about Puerto San Miguel is the bay - deep, wide and gorgeous, it's perfect for paddling, pedalos or pottering around in a sailing dinghy.'

On the northwest coast of Ibiza, pine forests and cliffs give way to a beach of the finest shingle – so fine in fact that most mistake it for sand. This is Puerto San Miguel. It's a peaceful place with just a handful of shops and restaurants on the other side of the bay. You'll only find one disco, so it's not exactly a party-people hangout. However, you will find a gathering of excellent, informal restaurants where the seafood is divine. Some say that one of the fish restaurants overlooking the beach is the finest on the island. But why take their word for it when you can sample it yourself. Down by the beach, the sheltered bay is ideal for watersports – it's a great place to fall off a windsurfer or try your hand at jet-skiing. There's a dive school here as well, and volleyball on the beach. And walkers have stunning countryside to explore, as long as they don't mind the odd uphill stretch. Keep your eyes on the prize though and you'll be rewarded with camera-worthy views. Further a field, visit the town of San Miguel, 5 kilometres inland on a Thursday to watch the locals performing traditional Ibizan folk dances to a band in front of the church. You could also visit the caves of C'an Marca and follow the footsteps of smugglers past stalactites and stalagmites to see the spectacular music and light show. Back at base, easy going Puerto San Miguel will definitely give you something to smile about.

Beaches

The crescent-shaped beach in San Miguel consists of delicate shingle, so fine it could almost be sand. Your toes certainly won't know the difference as they sink slowly into the warm, white powder. There are watersports galore here - from banana boats to jetski hire, so there are plenty of ways to make sure you have fun in the sun.

Eating out

The restaurants are fairly modest in appearance and informal in atmosphere, but their seafood dishes are simply gourmet. For something very special, head to the Hotel Hacienda, perched high on the clifftop, where you can enjoy gourmet dining while looking out for the rich and famous that frequent this 5 Star hotel.

Nightlife

Entertainment tends to be hotel-based, but there are various bars and one disco in the town area where you can relax after a day in the sun.

Shopping

Shopping is fairly minimal but there are a few supermarkets, beach paraphernalia and souvenir shops so food, swimming costumes and gifts won't be a problem. Take home some delicious 'Hierbas Ibicencas' - local liqueur made from the extract of 18 herbs.

Local information

Visit the magical caves of Can Marca and retrace the steps of infamous smugglers. If you are seeking some traditional culture visit the Hippie market at Es Cana, or take one of the various boat trips to other areas of this beautiful island. San Miguel Town is overlooked by a fine 14th century church that is one of the finest examples on the island. Every Thursday the local people gather in the square in front of the church to perform Ibizan folk dances to the sounds of an authentic Ibizan folk band, as wine is passed around the crowd.
