There's a real feeling of the traditional Madeira about holidays in Machico. This was the place where settlers first set foot on the island, and the area has quite a few historical landmarks, including Madeira's oldest church and two forts where the locals stood their ground against marauding pirates. But holidays in Machico are about more besides. There's a stretch of seafront that comes as close to a beach as anywhere on the island. Not to mention a gaggle of fine restaurants and some great 'levada' walks.
When it comes to accommodation, Machico holidays stay with the small and friendly. There's only one pukka hotel, the Dom Pedro Baia, a popular property with regular returners, overlooking sheltered Zarco Bay. Alternatively, if you're into bargain holidays, there's the Albegaria Do Penedo, set right on the prom next to a really cool lido with a seawater swimming pool. It's hardly the Ritz. But if you're happy with clean, comfortable accommodation and a friendly atmosphere, you won't be disappointed.
Typically for Madeira, the area around Machico is a paradise for lovers of nature. You can follow the trail of the river which flows through the town, and in summer you'll be likely to come across a kaleidoscopic range of colour plants and flowers as you ramble through the lush sub-tropical countryside, dotted with quaint white-washed houses. Alternatively just head for a cafe, order a glass of chilled vinho verde and enjoy some well earned R&R.
