Beaches

The long and curving beach at Katelios, known as Agia Varvara Beach consists of sand and pebbles and shelves gently into the shallow bay. It can have problems with seaweed at the start and end of season, but once you wade through the weed, the sea is clear with a sandy base. There are also a few sunbeds available for hire. Take a trip to Turtle Beach, the home of the rare loggerhead turtles, just 2km away and can be reached on foot.

Eating out

Katelios has been a fishing village for many years, so it is understandable that a variety of mouthwatering fish dishes are on offer in the tavernas and bars situated along the sea front. After a delicious meal why not indulge in a glass of ouzo?

Nightlife

As may be expected in this quiet fishing village, nightlife is somewhat non-existent. Evenings are spent enjoying a tasty meal, marvelling at the view and mixing with pleasant company. There are a small selection of local bars providing some traditional entertainment, but if you are desperate to live the disco lifestyle, Skala is the nearest resort in which to dance the night away.

Shopping

There is very little opportunity for shopping in Katelios, apart from the local mini market and a few small gift shops. For shopaholics both Skala and Argostoli offer a better variety.

Local information

Venture further afield to Argostoli, Skala and Poros by bus, running twice daily in high season. Hiring a car for more freedom to explore this mountainous and dramatic island is highly recommended. The coastal village of Sami is relatively near, where the film Captain Corelli's Mandolin was filmed. The village of Markopoulo has become famous for a phenomenon which coincides with the festivities which occur in mid-August in honour of the Virgin Mary. Large numbers of harmless snakes are said to appear around the Church of Our Lady which is considered miraculous and to bring good luck. So if you around on the eve of St Mary's Day (15th August), this may be an interesting spectacle to see. The tiny village also boasts panoramic views all year round.
